"A divorced woman in her late 50s recaptures her life in Sebastián Lelio’s pitch-perfect, terrifically written Gloria."
Gloria is a 58-year-old divorcée and mother of two grown children. Craving adventure and human connection, she joins the singles scene in colourful Santiago where she spends her nights disco dancing through crowds of middle-aged single men. After a series of romantic misfortunes, she meets Roldolfo (Sergio Hernandez), a recently divorced former naval officer. At first, Rodolfo seems to fulfil Gloria’s ache for companionship, but his emotional baggage brings obstacles to their relationship.
Remade as Gloria Bell in 2018 starring Julianne Moore, Lelio’s original sees Pauline García shine in her Berlinale Silver Bear- winning performance as the titular character in this deeply empathetic and humorous melodrama. A remarkable character study immersed in the pleasures, frustrations, needs and desires of the film’s middle-aged protagonist.
